Welcome to January's
Speaking of Leadership® Newsletter.
Speaking of Leadership - this year we will be picking our next President. As I view the primary campaigns, I continually process what is happening in light of which candidate will make the best leader for our country. It is not easy - as they all bring different strengths (and weaknesses) to the table. Many of the attributes for picking our leader are no different from those attributes used to pick CEOs for our largest enterprises. We all know that a successful leader needs to have followers and he or she can not merely turn to others and 'demand' results.
There is a mix of ingredients required to be effective: Inspiration, command of the subject matter, focus, courage, confidence, persistence, respect, intellect, emotional intelligence and experience. When you are leading the country, just imagine the range of subjects for which you need to fully understand. Good organizational design and having the best people around you will help you gain this knowledge.
Oh, one other thing. Culture! Company's struggle with changing culture all the time. It is not easy and does not come easily. Making changes of this magnitude often take years and requires intense focus. If we think we are going to elect a new President and the Washington culture will be different by the end of the first year we will be sadly disappointed. |
